Searching online for a good beer and burger place in Union County led me to the perfect place. The HAT Tavern in Summit is located inside of the Grand Summit Hotel. Sharing this landmark location and a name with a long history, the HAT Tavern lives up to it’s moniker. (read more on their website)
HAT is an acronym for Hamburgers*Ales*Tapas. Great service, tasty food and of course craft beer! I had the pleasure to talk to General Manager Walter Curtis and his enthusiasm towards their vision was evident. HAT Tavern features local “Jersey Fresh” products in their menu and displays art from local artists. I was thoroughly impressed with the Greek Lamb burger. Meanwhile, their traditional burger features the renowned “La Freida” blend of brisket and short rib.
Walter tells me that the other focus of tapas will continue to grow as its popularity continues to grow. Now onto the good stuff we are all here for; currently on tap they offer Flying Fish Extra Pale Ale, Victory Prima Pils, Allagash White, Troegs Sunshine Pils, Smuttynose Finest Kind IPA and Rogue Dead Guy Ale. I was also told that they aim to always offer a New Jersey brewer on tap and bottled. Tonight it was Flying Fish and they also carry River Horse regularly. They are excited about a lot of new good brews added to their rotation in the near future.
All in all, it’s a great location with a good ambiance, fantastic service, reasonable prices and a bright future.
