Keegan Ales Come to NJ

Keegan Ales, makers of the much talked about Mother’s Milk Stout, are coming to New Jersey!  The official launch party will be held at The Shepherd & The Knucklehead Pub on March 1st. Keegan beers will start pouring at 7:00PM. Come in early and enjoy some of the 23 other beers that will be on tap.  We will also have on tap Old Capital and Hurricane Kitty IPA.  Keegan Ales will also be available starting March 1st at other retailers in bottles.

Tommy Keegan (Owner/Brewer) will be there to celebrate the NJ launch of Keegan too.

The Shepherd & The Knucklehead Pub opened its doors in 1998. Our goal was to introduce fine craft beers to the New Jersey area.  We only serve craft and micro brewed beers. More then 90% of our offerings are brewed in the United States by micro breweries.  While New Jersey still remains one of the smallest craft beer markets in the country we continue to bring an ever-changing selection of craft beers to our customers.  In 2008 we under went a complete renovation and replaced our old 20 line draft tower with a new 24 line tower. The renovation helped to create the ideal environment for enjoying some of the best draft beer available in North Jersey.  We continue to lead the market by providing a constantly changing selection of beer.  In 2010 we had over 300 different beers on tap and are on pace to exceed that number for 2011.  Our goal is to have 365 different beers, one new beer for every day of the year.  We are located in Haledon NJ just a few minutes from the William Paterson University campus.

Keegan Ales was founded in early 2003 when Tommy Keegan learned about an empty building in Kingston that nobody would buy because there was a defunct brewery stuck in it! (Although the building was built in the early 1800′s, the building was most recently home to the Woodstock Brewing Company.)

After months of cleaning and rebuilding, Keegan Ales brewed its first batch of beers on August 1, 2003 (Tommy’s mom’s birthday) and set out hand-selling beer to local bars and restaurants early September. The first kegs of Old Capital, Hurricane Kitty and Mother’s Milk went to competition at Hunter Mountain that month. Mother’s Milk took home a gold medal and Old Capital was honored with People’s Choice: Best of Show.

After getting the brewery up and running selling draft beer, the crew at Keegan Ales turned their attention to the defunct bottling line. It had been left broken and literally in hundreds of pieces. It took months of pounding, tinkering and countless scratching of heads, but by the summer of 2004, Keegan Ales was available in 12 ounce bottles!

Keegan Ales has gone on to win many more awards and recognitions, including Best Brewery in The Hudson Valley (2009), Best Brewery in New York State (2009) and Best Craft-Brewed Beer in New York State (2009).

Early in 2010, The New York Times declared Mother’s Milk one of the top ten stouts in North America and Keegan Ales has also been awarded 2010 Small Business of the Year by The Ulster Chamber of Commerce and The Ulster County Development Corporation.
